| Class Descriptions Fundamentals Mellow Yoga offers long, slow, stretching sequences that are suitable for both beginner and physically adept students. You will develop a deep awareness not only of the body but also how your mind is reacting to the body, (which is a hallmark of "Kripalu Yoga," one of the largest and most well know styles of yoga on the east coast.) You will release tensions and accumulated stresses with long rhythmic breaths. In these classes, you will have time to feel deeply, relax and restore your vital energies. Open Vinyasa Within the context of intelligent yoga sequencing, Open Vinyasa classes vary from day to day. Sometimes there are longish holdings and sometimes the tempo moves quickly. Open Vinyasa yoga flows are designed to address the entire physical frame. Every thing is there: forward folding, standing and balancing postures, upper body, abdominal work, lateral stretches, twists, backbends and inversions. More importantly, these classes will transform your life in very deep mental, emotional and spiritual ways that you cannot understand ahead of time. You will have just have to experience the revolutionary life affirming outlook that yoga puts you in touch with. After many months of practice, you'll have a direct experience of yoga (an experience of 'Oneness with all things') rather than an opinion. You won't understand what yoga can do for your life with just one or two classes. Come and see. You have to practice. It is far more than "stretching" as you will discover. These classes are created to deliver a complete experience. Open Vinyasa Long Class is not suitable for beginners and generally people new to the studio. It is a very challenging class. There may be handstands, headstands, full splits, deep twists in a very warm room. This kind of class is for those who really know yoga alignments, their bodies and minds well. Yin Yoga practice is more often slow, steady and mostly stationary, with a sense of core softness and surrender. In a sensitive and non aggressive way we find shape and posture in the body and bring it to an appropriate edge of tension. Watch, breathe, and surrender as space beyond the mind opens, the heart softens. By offering this Yin compliment to our busy, harried lives and strong physical practices the body is supported and loved, joints are strengthened and made supple, energetic lines flow openly. We can truly experience letting go as growth. Heated Room : Fundamentals Classes are at normal room temperature or slightly above. The room during a Open Class class is moderately warm (85 degrees.) This is like practicing on a warm summers day. Like a tropical yoga vacation. We do this because it is much safer and more efficient for muscles to release toxins and lactic acid in a warm room. You will be moving and breathing synchronistically, so only moderate warmth is necessary. Some places in the room are hotter than 90 degrees. Uneven Heat: The room is large and unevenly heated. If you like it hotter or cooler than 85 degrees, come to class early and get a spot that suits your temperature preference. Meditation is free of charge. It is intended for those who are ready to sit for 30 minutes of unguided practice. There is a meditation training and retreat TBA. It is appropriate for those who are new to meditation and for those who are experienced and wish to create a retreat time. |
